In his timely and entertaining multi-media presentation, Anthony Lappé, executive editor of Guerrilla News Network (http://gnn.tv), examines the future of citizen journalism through the lens of his acclaimed new graphic novel Shooting War(Grand Central Publishing, Nov ‘07).
Based on Lappé’s own experience as a well-known New York City blogger and reporter in Iraq, Shooting War is a dark satire set in 2011 about a young American videoblogger in Baghdad who uses new technology to change the course of history. Rolling Stone called Shooting War “scary-smart” and Entertainment Weekly wrote it’s “an intense and bracing read, torn from the headlines of tomorrow.”
Opening audiences’ eyes to the opportunities of the citizen journalism revolution, Lappé shows how technology is transforming the way news is gathered, transmitted and viewed. He argues that despite increasing mainstream media consolidation, exciting new technologies have given citizens the tools to create a more democratic, and dynamic, news media. His lively presentation includes war stories from Iraq, highlights from his favorite web sites, eye-popping illustrations from Shooting War, and scenes from his award-winning Showtime documentary that inspired the graphic novel.
Lappé has written for The New York Times, The Huffington Post, New York magazine and Salon, among many others, and has been a documentary producer for MTV and Fuse. He has hosted a show on Air America Radio, been a guest on numerous NPR and Pacifica radio shows, as well as other many media outlets across the country.
